A 28-year-old Corinth man has been charged with aggravated assault after an alleged incident on Saturday sent a 74-year-old man to the hospital, Alcorn County Sheriff Ben Caldwell said.

Joshua Burress, of Highway 2 Northeast, Corinth, was still in jail on Tuesday afternoon on a $15,000 bond.

His arrest came after deputies were called to a residence on County Road 520 on Saturday morning at about 10:30 for a physical disturbance/fight in progress, Caldwell said.

Deputies discovered a person had been physically assaulted and suffered from a fractured nose and severe head trauma, Caldwell said.

Burress was arrested nearby in a traffic stop.

The alleged victim was transported to Magnolia Regional Health Center and was later airlifted. The alleged victim has since been released from the hospital, Caldwell said.

There were no weapons involved in the incident, the sheriff added.

It is unclear what brought the incident on, and the sheriff’s office continues to investigate the matter, Caldwell said.

The incident took place on the alleged victim’s property.

The name of the alleged victim was not released.
