Hard work and playing as a team were two key factors for the Kossuth Middle School Girls basketball squad, which won the North State Championship on Saturday.
The Aggies beat Starkville 41-30 to claim the championship for the 10-county region for the second year in a row.
Prior to the championship game, Head Coach Angie Malone said she told her team that the trophy was at Kossuth and she wanted it to stay there.
“We still wanted it— it was ours,” Malone told Corinth Today. “Nobody else can take it.”
The team was “ecstatic” after the victory Saturday at Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville, Malone said.
“I’m proud that I got a chance to coach those girls,” she said.
The team endured some tough losses in the season, but they did not give up, Malone added.
“They just kept on fighting, and they were willing to put in the time and just make it right,” she said. “I knew it was in them the whole year. As a coach it’s our job to get it out of them.”
The team was “fired up” and showed a lot of growth throughout the season, Malone said.
“I was really proud of them,” she said.
The Aggies led throughout most of the game, said Malone, adding, “I think our defense stepped up and played well.”
Moreover, she said the girls displayed good shooting, hitting six-three pointers. But most of all she said the girls played as a team the whole game.
