State Rep. Lester Carpenter, R-Burnsville, said he will work on a bill this legislative session dealing with the Mississippi Adequate Education Program (MAEP) formula.

“As we work our way through the session there will be several bills filed concerning this matter,” Carpenter told Corinth Today on Wednesday.
He said he would like to see school funding based on the “pupils in the seat” rather than average daily attendance.
“That would give them a budget to work with,” Carpenter said.
Schools are being “persecuted” by a rule that says money is taken away based on a percentage of absences, he said.
“You can’t run a school system on that formula,” Carpenter said, adding, “We can’t be responsible for a child not going to school.”
