A large sidewalk and lighting improvement project in the city of Corinth could go out for bid in late winter or early spring, according to Street Commissioner Philip Verdung.
The project involves improving sidewalks and installing lighting on Meigg Street between Cass Street and the city park.
Verdung said the lighting in the project could be decorative and resemble the type of fixtures that are seen in downtown areas.
The hope is that the lighting and sidewalk work can begin in the spring, Verdung said.
Moreover, the project will involve making handicap accessible improvements to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Verdung said.
Existing sidewalks in that area are outdated and do not meet current regulations, he noted.
The city received a federal highways grant through the Mississippi Department of Transportation of $554,208 for the project, said David Huwe, the city’s director of community development and planning.
The city’s match for the project is $246,712, Huwe added.
A section of sidewalk between South Cemetery Street and Young Street was not slated to be improved in the project because those sidewalks have already been upgraded, Huwe noted.
Huwe acknowledged that the project will be a pretty big improvement to the area.
The street department is addressing some drainage issues along the route before the project begins, Verdung said.
