The Kossuth Middle School Girls basketball team will play for the North State Championship on Saturday after winning the five-county tournament this past weekend.

Kossuth will play Starkville on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville for the final game of the season.

Head Coach Angie Malone said her team won the five-county tournament and the North State Championship last year also.

The Aggies went into the five-county tournament as the No. 2 seed this year and knocked off four No. 1 seed teams from New Albany, Burnsville, Baldwyn and Corinth.

Kossuth beat Corinth in the five-county championship game at Northeast Mississippi Community College by a score of 44-24, Malone said.

The team really stepped up its game for the tournament, she said.

“We just did like a 360 turnaround, and we put in a lot of extra hours, weekend practices,” she said.

Malone made some changes with plays, and “It just clicked with them, and they started playing team ball. We were in our own little zone last week. We played better than we have all year.”
