Tishomingo County had the third highest overdose death rate in the state for the period from 2011-2017, a Mississippi State Department of Health report says.
Alcorn and Tishomingo counties were identified as overdose death “hotspots” in the report.
Alcorn County had 40 overdose deaths between 2011 and 2017 at a rate of 15.3 deaths per 100,000 people.
Tishomingo County had 32 overdose deaths during that time period at a rate of 23.4 deaths per 100,000 people.
Pearl River County had the highest fatal overdose rate at 26.2 deaths per 100,000 people.
Alcorn and Tishomingo counties exceeded the state average of 27 fatal drug overdoses per county between 2011 and 2017 and the statewide rate of 10.7 overdose deaths per 100,000 people.
There were 346 overdose deaths in Mississippi in 2017, averaging nearly one per day, the report says.
Statewide, drug overdose deaths were up 24 percent in 2017 compared to 2011.
