Know the warning signs, help available
There were 13 suicides in Alcorn County in 2018, according to Coroner Jay Jones.
That is a higher number of suicides than typically occur in a year, he said.
Most of the suicides in 2018 in Alcorn County were males, he said.
Suicide warning signs are listed below. Those who may be at risk can call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255. More information is available at the CDC website.
Warning signs of suicide are:
- Feeling like a burden
- Being isolated
- Increased anxiety
- Feeling trapped or in unbearable pain
- Increased substance use
- Looking for a way to access lethal means
- Increased anger or rage
- Extreme mood swings
- Expressing hopelessness
- Sleeping too little or too much
- Talking or posting about wanting to die
- Making plans for suicide
To help someone at risk:
- Keep them safe.
- Be there.
- Help them connect.
