Democrat Alcorn County Tax Collector Larry Ross is seeking re-election to a third term.
Ross has one opponent in the race so far — independent candidate Bobby Burns.
Numerous accomplishments have occurred during Ross’ tenure, he said. Ross noted that he and his staff recently went through extensive training for a new state computer program for vehicle tags and titles.
Ross said he takes the job of tax collector “very seriously” and conducts the office with “integrity” and the highest ethical standards. Another accomplishment was installing a security system for the safety of the employees, he added.
He enjoys helping people find additional savings on their homestead exemptions. The tax collector’s office is a very “intricate” operation, and he said the customer is always No. 1. The office also collects taxes for the cities of Corinth, Farmington and Rienzi.
The goal is to take care of people and enforce all of the rules and regulations, he said, adding that he has been through several successful audits as tax collector. Ross said he loves the tax collector job, which involves working with the board of supervisors to make sure revenue is directed to the correct county departments.
Ross noted that he is very committed to making the community a better place, especially when it comes to his involvement with several civic organizations. Ross also said he has a great staff with many years of experience and minimal turnover in the tax collector’s office.
The office collects about $18 million in revenue annually.
