A spokeswoman for the national clothing retailer Marshalls said Wednesday that the company “has still not officially announced a new store opening for Corinth.”

It is unclear if this represents a shift from the statement the company issued in October when it said, “We anticipate that the new Marshalls store will open in Corinth sometime in Spring 2019.”

Originally, Marshalls said the store might have been open this past fall.

The outside of the Marshalls store in the Harper Square shopping center on U.S. Highway 72 East appears completed. But a building permit has not yet been issued to work on the inside of the building, said city of Corinth Building Official Greg Tyson.

The Wednesday statement from Marshalls spokeswoman Katie Babb also said, “When opening new stores, we tend to announce our plans when we believe the time is right to do so competitively. Generally speaking, it is our practice not to announce store openings until close to an intended opening date.”

She said Corinth Today would be kept “updated on the store announcement for this area.”

The shopping center where the Marshalls space is located has seen major improvements in the past couple of years. Hobby Lobby opened in the center in July of 2017, and ALDI opened in the summer.

“When the time is right to do so competitively” What better time than when you only have one competitor in the area? Penny’s is gone, Goodys’ is gone, Burkes is hardly competition. Belk is the only department store we have, and I, for one, would love to have a choice in shopping without having to go to Tupelo or Florence.
