Grant funding to build a dog park in Corinth will be applied for early next year, an official said.

Corinth-Alcorn Parks Director Robin Baker said up to $25,000 in funding will be sought from PetSafe to create a dog park.

PetSafe, based in Knoxville, Tenn., awards funding to 13 communities each year to build, maintain and upgrade dog parks.

More than 120 grant applications were submitted in 2018, and PetSafe has awarded more than $1 million for dog parks since the Bark for Your Park grant program launched seven years ago.

There is a PetSafe dog park in Hattiesburg.

There would be no obligation to match the grant money with local dollars, Baker noted. Word of whether the grant will be awarded for Corinth-Alcorn County Parks & Recreation could be known around June, she added.

Dogs are not allowed on the walking trail in the park, and dogs walked in other areas must be on leashes, Baker said.

A dog park would be a fenced-in area where people could release their dogs from leashes. There could also be barrels for the dogs to run through and obstacles for them to jump over.

Sitting areas, water stations and bags to clean up waste would also be incorporated into the dog park.

A location has not been decided for the proposed dog park, but there must be room for parking and it would be nice to have shade, Baker said.
