Rienzi Mayor Walter Williams said he will ask the Alcorn School Board on Monday night to let students at a Christian academy use the former Rienzi Elementary School for classrooms.
Williams noted that the school board needs to modify a contract that says the building cannot be used as a school.
He proposed modifying the agreement to state that it cannot be used as a charter school and just for the Christian academy.
The former Rienzi Elementary was transferred to the town a couple of years ago with the stipulation that the property could not be used as a school.
Meanwhile, Williams said Christian academy students are currently using the gym next to the school, which he says is not the ideal place to teach children.
He wants the Christian academy to be allowed to use the main part of the school building so the students can have their own classrooms.
The former Rienzi Elementary School is on the agenda for the Monday night Alcorn School Board meeting to be discussed in closed session.
There are a number of reasons a board may go into closed session under the state Open Meetings Act, such as litigation, personnel, real estate or other specified matters. Under state law, the basic reason for the closed session must be disclosed to the public.
Alcorn Schools Superintendent Larry Mitchell said a board member asked that the matter be put on the agenda. Mitchell did not have any other information on the issue Monday afternoon.
The elementary schools in Rienzi and Glen were closed a couple of years ago and merged with other schools in the district.
