Corinth Police arrested a convicted felon with a firearm after officials were notified that a driver was waving a gun at traffic while leaving a local business on Thursday afternoon, a news release states.
Police located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop on Allen Street, and Montrel Fernando, 22, of Corinth, admitted that a gun was in the vehicle, a Corinth Police Department news release states. Another person was also in the vehicle.
A handgun with a fully loaded 33-round magazine was found in the vehicle, and suspected crack cocaine was found in plain view on the driver’s seat. Almost 5 grams of suspected crack was found, the news release added.
Fernando was charged with possession of controlled substance, and possession of firearm by a convicted felon.
Corinth Police have responded to a number of gun-related incident this week.
More than 30 shell casings were found after a report of gunshots fired Sunday in Corinth, according to police.
No injuries were reported in the incident, which occurred around 11:20 p.m. at the corner of Horton Street and Martin Luther King Drive, police said.
A man told Corinth Police that he and another male were in a vehicle when they heard gunshots coming from behind them, the police report states.
Bullets hit the back glass of the vehicle, and the man said his friend started shooting back “about 15 times until he ran out of bullets,” the report states.
Police found 18 shell casings from a 45-caliber, 14 shell casings from a 9 millimeter and three bullet fragments.
The area was taped off, evidence was collected, and people at a nearby residence said they heard gunshots but did not see anything. No suspects are in custody.
Second Shots-Fired Report in One Day
This was the second shots fired report that Corinth Police had responded to on Sunday.
The other shots fired report was in the area of a park on South Johns Street on Sunday afternoon.
Police responded to the park in the 1100 block of South Johns Street at about 2:13 p.m.
Three shell casings from a 9-millimeter were discovered after a brief canvass of the area, the police report states.
A gunshot was also in a nearby parked vehicle.
