Walnut Woman Dies in Alcorn County Crash

A 25-year-old Walnut woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Alcorn County on Wednesday night, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Haley Wilbanks was apparently driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 72 when she collided head-on with an 18-wheeler, an MHP news release states.

The 18-wheeler was driven by driven by Oscar Bejarano-Mendez, 59, of Ontario, who was uninjured.

Wilbanks was transported by ambulance to Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth where she died from injuries she sustained in the crash.

The crash occurred in the Union Center area of western Alcorn County at about 7:39 p.m. about eight miles east of Walnut.

A large number of emergency officials were at the scene, including volunteer firefighters, Magnolia Ambulance, thee Alcorn County Sheriff’s Office and the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
