A 20-year-old Booneville woman was airlifted to Tupelo after she was involved in a two-vehicle crash with a Mississippi Highway Patrol trooper just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, an MHP news release states.

It appeared Savanna Sheppard “pulled into the path” of the highway patrol trooper and was airlifted to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo with “moderate injuries,” the news release issued by MHP late Tuesday states.

A passenger with Sheppard was transported by ambulance to Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth with “minor injuries,” according to MHP.

The trooper, whose name was not released by MHP, was on “routine patrol” and traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 72 when the crash occurred, the release says. The trooper received “minor injuries” and was treated at the scene, it adds.

Tishomingo County Coroner Mack Wilemon said a firefighter who was at the scene said the MHP trooper was Zachary Meeks of Burnsville.

Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Master Sgt. Ray Hall could not confirm whether Meeks was the trooper in the crash. Hall stated, “As far as the trooper involved, we do not release names of any officers/troopers that are involved in on-duty crashes/incidents.”

The highway patrol is leading the investigation, Hall added.

It appeared the crash occurred when Sheppard was headed southbound on Eastport Street and “pulled into the path” of the trooper, according to MHP.
