A Corinth man who has been indicted for allegedly assaulting a 74-year-old man remains in Alcorn County Jail on a $100,000 bond.

Joshua Andrew Burress, 29, of State Highway 2 Northeast, pleaded not guilty last week in Alcorn County Circuit Court to the aggravated assault charge, which is enhanced due to the alleged victim being over 65 years old.

Burress was arrested on the indictment last week.

The alleged assault occurred Aug. 26, 2017, and the victim suffered a “subdural hemorrhage and parenchyma hemorrhage of the brain” and serious bodily injury, the indictment states.

Since the alleged victim was more than 65 years old, “the state will seek the enhanced penalty” of a prison term or fine “twice that authorized by law,” the indictment adds.

Burress is represented by public defender Tyler Moss of Corinth.

At the time of the alleged incident, deputies were called to a residence on County Road 520 at about 10:30 a.m. on a report of a physical disturbance/fight in progress, Sheriff Ben Caldwell has said.

Deputies discovered a person had been physically assaulted and suffered from an injured nose and severe head trauma, Caldwell said after the incident last year.

Burress was arrested in a traffic stop near the location of the alleged assault. The alleged victim was taken to the hospital and released.

There were no weapons involved in the incident, the sheriff said at the time. It is unclear what caused the incident, which took place on the alleged victim’s property.

Corinth Today has chosen not to release the name of the alleged victim.
