The daughter of famed “Walking Tall” Sheriff Buford Pusser has passed away, officials confirmed Thursday morning.
Dwana Pusser lived in Adamsville, Tenn. and was heavily involved in the Sheriff Buford Pussser Festival.
An announcement on the festival’s Facebook page early Thursday stated, “We are saddened to share the news that Dwana Pusser passed away. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers!!!”
A woman at the Buford Pusser Museum confirmed the passing of Dwana Pusser but did not know any details.
Dwana was one of the first people on scene of her father’s fiery Corvette crash in 1974 between Selmer and Adamsville, the festival’s website states. The legendary sheriff was dead.
Buford Pusser was sheriff of McNairy County, Tenn. and was portrayed in the 1973 movie “Walking Tall.”
The festival’s website says Pusser was elected McNairy County Sheriff in 1964 and that he was shot eight times, knifed seven times and “destroyed 87 whiskey stills in 1965 alone.”
His wife, Pauline, was shot in the head twice when she and Buford were attacked by assailants in a car in 1967, the museum’s website says.
