Average Wage in Alcorn County Declined Slightly

The average weekly wage in Alcorn County was in the middle of the 82 counties in Mississippi, figures showed.

Alcorn County’s average weekly wage was $649, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Kemper County had the highest average weekly wage in the state at $972, and Issaquena County’s was the lowest at $450. A full list counties and their average weekly wages can be seen below.

Statewide, Mississippi had the lowest average weekly wage in the nation at $732.

The data come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ most recent Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages. These figures are from the quarter that ended in June. To view the report click here.

Tippah County’s average weekly wage was $649, basically the same as Alcorn County’s. Prentiss County was at $622, and Tishomingo County at $614.

Tippah, Prentiss and Tishomingo counties saw their average weekly wages increase from June 2016 to June 2017, while Alcorn County’s average dipped by $5. Alcorn County was among the 22 percent of counties in the state that saw a decline in average weekly wage.

While Alcorn County had a slight drop in the average weekly wage there was an increase in the number of people working from the year before. Alcorn County had 800 establishments employing 14,058 people in June, which was an increase of 275 employees from the same time a year before.

The education and health employment sector had the highest average weekly wage in Alcorn County at $988. Alcorn County’s manufacturing employment sector had an average weekly wage of $881.

Leisure and hospitality was the sector with the lowest average weekly wage in Alcorn County at $290. Certain sectors may show much lower average wages due to high numbers of part-time employees.

The federal wage data covers about 97 percent of civilian employment but could exclude family farms, sole ownerships and railroad workers.
