Mississippi Blood Services is at “crisis-level” inventory and is holding a two-day blood drive at the Corinth Walmart on Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days.
People who donate with MBS from Dec. 26 to Jan. 6 will automatically be entered for a chance to win a $1,000 Visa card. The winner will be announced Monday.
Donors will receive a T-shirt while supplies last and can check their overall cholesterol levels on their MBSConnect account.
Patients across the state rely on the kindness of strangers to ensure blood is available, and donating is safe, simple and saves lives, MBS says.
Blood supplies hit the crisis level after a large drop in donors due to the weather and the holidays. MBS had 25 percent fewer donors than expected in December. That represents about 1,000 units short of what is needed.
MBS asks people to share this information on social media and call (601) 368-2673 or visit msblood.com to find a nearby drive.
“Patients are counting on healthy individuals like you to share the gift of life by donating blood—and many of them don’t even know it yet,” an MBS news release says.
Donors must be at least 16 years old (16-year-olds need signed parental consent, and the consent form is available at msblood.com); weigh at least 110 pounds; and have a valid ID.
