A woods fire got near a residence in the Biggersville area on Tuesday afternoon.
The homeowner, Jerry Arnold, said he left with his mom to go to town and came back to find the woods behind his home burning. Arnold started to beat the fire out with a pine limb but did not make much headway and called the fire department, he said.
“It wasn’t far from the house,” Arnold noted.
The cause of the fire was unknown, said Biggersville Fire & Rescue Capt. John Fair.
“We heard some four wheelers down in there before we went to town,” Arnold said.
The Mississippi Forestry Commission arrived on scene with a bulldozer and went into the woods to contain the blaze.
Officials wanted to avoid the fire reaching a sagebrush field.
“It’s going to be contained,” Fair said.
Grass and woods fires have been occurring frequently in Alcorn County in the past few weeks, Fair said. A fire in Rienzi took out a building Monday, he noted.
People should be very careful if they are burning rubbish and be aware of the wind, Fair said. Residents should not leave a fire until it is known to be extinguished, he noted.
Arnold was not burning, and the fire was not his fault, Fair said. The fire occurred on County Road 513, and the Kossuth Fire Department also assisted.
