KOSSUTH – The Kossuth Aggies’ offense had been averaging 42 points per game but was unable to overcome the athletic East Side defense.
East Side knocked Kossuth out of the 3A state playoffs Friday night in the second round by a score of 40-7.
Kossuth (11-2) had relied on a balanced offensive attack all season but had little luck moving the ball through the air against East Side.
Quarterback Matthew Bobo completed only one pass for 15 yards.
“East Side did a good job up front,” Kossuth head coach Brian Kelly said. “It was hard to win the line of scrimmage. They have a lot of speed on defense.”
Bobo was able to reach pay dirt, though, on a 1-yard rush.
East Side (12-1) had run the ball effectively all season and the Aggies were unable to stop the Trojans.
East Side scored on its first six possessions before Kossuth was able to come up with a stop.
Kaelan Hall rushed for touchdowns from 15- and 3-yards out. Traveyon Craig added three rushing touchdowns and a 78-yard touchdown reception thrown by Kamarian Williams.
“It was hard to get them off the field,” Kelly said. “It’s tough trying to stop their running game.”
Turning Point: With East Side up 14-7, Kossuth failed on a fake punt attempt from its own 37-yard line setting up East Side with a short field for a third touchdown.
Point Man: Kossuth running back Jaley Adams finished with 110 rushing yards.
Talking Point: “We had a great year, I’m going to miss every senior so much,” Bobo said.
• East Side scored 26 points unanswered in the first two quarters to take a 26-7 lead into halftime.
• Kossuth failed on all three of its fourth-down attempts.
• East Side defeated Kossuth 38-32 in the second round of the playoffs last season.
